The paper deals with a theoretical analysis of pupils’ preconceptions, their formation, modification and importance in educational process. The purpose of the paper is to explain the importance of diagnostics of pupils’ preconceptions in education, which constitute the basis for meaningful learning. Preconceptions play a crucial role in constructivist education. They are formed not only in the beginning, but throughout the whole educational process. In order to teach a pupil a new term in a way he/she will understand it, we need to start from the point he/she knows from own experience and which he/she has already come across.
